Due week 2 (September 14)

Welcome to Texas History!! Our history is rich and storied here in Texas.  We will have a lot of fun learning and exploring Texas history this year. 

Remember to do your reading this week from the Discover Texas CD-Rom.  Come to class prepared to discuss the topics in your reading.  If you are having difficulty finding the right files, let me know (email, comment here, text, or even call).  You need to open the powerpoint file (PC users) or PDF file (Mac users) to access the curriculum, as I showed you on the first day of class. 

Reading for this week:
1)Volume I, Chapter 2 

Homework for this week:
1) Get familiar with the CD-Rom
2) Draw, label and color Texas rivers on the map of Texas
3) Select a project from Volume I (see list below)
4) Vocabulary matching for Vol I 
5) Finish State Symbols flip book
   - State Flag
   - State Seal
   - State tree
   - State flower
   - State bird
   - State insect
   - State motto
   - 1 more state symbol that you find using the internet (there are a ton to choose from)

Projects that you may choose from (found in the activities pages of Volume 1)
- Learning more- Caves (Research and write a paragraph about caves to share with the class.  A map would be a good visual aid for this project)
- Learning more - The Edwards Aquifer (Research and write a paragraph about the Edwards Aquifer to share with the class.  A map would be a good visual aid for this project)
- Learning more - Archaeology (Research and write a paragraph about Texas Archaeology to share with the class)
- Learning more - Native Texans (Research and write a paragraph about Native Texans to share with the class.  A map would be a good visual aid for this project)
- Learning more - Tall Tales (Research and write a paragraph about Texas tall tales to share with the class)
- Doing More - Make a map of Texas (Make a poster board map of Texas... label everything listed on the project description)
- Doing More - Make an Atlatl (give some history and present your atlatl)
- Doing More - Make a Travois (This could be of any size, give some history and present to the class)
- Doing More - Learn how limestone and clay filter water by making  a model (you may record your experiment on a video to present)
- Doing More - Make a miniature pueblo - build a model and present to the class
- Doing More - Write a native texan's journal - present the journal in class

You need pre-approval if you work together and if you choose a topic not listed!
