Read Volume V(5) Chapters 1, 2, & 3

Choose a project from Volume V, the project is due Week 5 (March 3rd) 

Choose from the following, don't forget visual aids!:

- Juneteenth: research and explain to the class what Emancipation day is (also known as Juneteenth)- how is it celebrated in our community (or Dallas, if you can't find anything local)

- A Soldier's Fare: research and describe to the class what a Civil War soldier would eat.  

- A narrow Victory: Abraham Lincoln is remembered as one of our greatest leaders; however, he was not overwhelmingly popular in his own time. He was defeated in almost every political race he entered, but came back to try again. When at last he ran for president, he did not receive a majority of the popular vote. His victory was decided by the electoral college.

 Learn about the electoral college. Have we always had it? What is the reasoning behind it? Do you think it is wise?
 Have there been other times in our history when a presidential candidate has won decisively in the electoral college without receiving a majority of the popular vote? How does this happen? Do you think it is fair?
 What part did Lincoln’s own tenacity and God’s providential hand play in changing the course of our nation? How might history have been affected without one or the other? 

Battlefield; Texas:  What Civil War Battles took place in Texas?  What events led up to the fight and what was the results of the battle?  

The Civil War in Collin County: Research our county during the Civil war.  How did the war influence the lives of those who lived here?  

James W. Throckmorton: Research and describe to the class: Who was this prominent Collin County man?  What part did he play in Texas Secession and return to the United States?  How can we understand his seeming split mind on his support of non-secession and his love for Texas.  This man is an interesting character, dig deep and teach us about him.
